2011 State Of The Club Address

Posted by: | Comments (2)

A few days ago Michael Serafini, a resident of Boom Boom Room & proprietor of Gramaphone Records in Chicago, posted a self proclaimed “rant” to Facebook. The author of ‘While My Tutrntables Gently Weep” took this and ran with it in an amazingly long blog post came up with this… While I don’t agree with everything he says 100%, WMTGW is on point with pretty much everything, especially the CLUBS section of the “rant” (below) and most of it describes Sacramento club’s to a T!

Here’s the link to his post and I’ve included the CLUBS portion here…LHQBD00Z 300x74 2011 State Of The Club Address

http://www.wmtgw.com/2011-state-of-the-dj-address/

CLUBS
The result of these “advances” means the average club going audience has gotten used to mediocre DJs & Performances that don’t truly move them; both their body and their soul. So when music directors, general managers, owners, etc. line-up entertainment for their club, especially in the current economic situation, they go for the lowest common denominator. “Who can give me the most bang for my buck right now?” It is about immediacy of return, not about building a club that will reap dividends over time. However, this is just shortsightedness on the part of management as a club with a defined musical direction and a cohesive stable of 2-3 resident DJs versed in diversity and dance floor manipulation will do far better in the long run than a club that does something completely different every night and tries to follow every fad. This lack of know-how and faith combined with laziness and the ever present quest for the easy buck is why management now puts the full responsibilities on the entertainers (DJs & Event Producers) to promote and sell the event and then only offer what is made as a cover charge as compensation. It’s a no-lose situation for the venue because they have nothing invested, they keep the highly profitable bar sales and they receive tons of free advertising for the venue through the various “entertainers” they use to fill their clubs. However, what these people fail to see is that this system waters down the identity, and in turn, integrity of their establishment and does not foster an environment of partnership between the venue and the talent. For example look at the way Robert Williams supported Frankie Knuckles at The Warehouse and then later Ron Hardy at The Music Box. When Frankie Knuckles first began playing his New York styled disco sets at The Warehouse in Chicago (the venue where ‘House Music’ got its name) it was slow and Frankie was not well received, it has been described as luke-warm at best. However, given the unwavering support of owner Robert Williams based on his belief in the music and Frankie, Chicago became the birthplace of House Music. Imagine for a moment if after the first couple of slow nights Williams had cut Frankie and tried to get something more financially lucrative and successful? The same can also be said of Michael Brody and Larry Levan’s partnership which began at Reade Street and led to the legendary Paradise Garage, or Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton’s support of Mike Pickering and the Acid House sound at The Hacienda.

In short clubs truly are no longer clubs, but venues. They are a place for DJs and Event Producers to hold events, not a place for people to get together and unify over a common cause (which in this case is music and nightlife culture). This, combined with lackluster talent, has driven down the club-goer’s desire to attend events, especially when they have to pay a cover. The word that best describes the average American club goer is apathetic. It doesn’t matter to them who’s playing or what’s happening because they simply can’t tell the difference anymore. They are solely there to be seen and get laid. Times were a lot better when it was dance your ass off to amazing music, then be seen and then get laid. To all you club goers out there, times are hard and we’re all trying to save a buck, however that DJ is working hard for your $5, $10 or whatever cover may be, so stop asking to be on the guest list and stop complaining about cover charges. If you don’t have the money, don’t go out and if you just don’t like the cover complain to the venue’s management that they don’t compensate their Entertainment adequately in order to keep the cost down for their clientele.

An all new Traktor is coming!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

A few weeks ago Native Instruments gave us a little tease with this video showing Dennis Ferrer and the Martinez Brothers playing a gig on some CDJ2000′s and an all-new version of Traktor Scratch Pro…

Since then there has been a bunch of hearsay and rumor, including one from a very good source that Traktor Pro 2 would be announced by NI on Feb 1st (which it wasn’t), but nothing concrete. Through some snooping we’ve found a few European and Asian stores that already have a webpage for the new products, but they haven’t put links to them on their site yet. However, since they were published to the web, Google helped us find the info anyways!

Coming soon is a new Traktor (one of each version: LE, Duo, Pro, Scratch Duo, & Scratch Pro) and two new audio interfaces (Traktor Audio 6 & Traktor Audio 10) to replace the Audio4DJ and Audio8DJ. We don’t know everything yet but we do know there will be…

  • Colored waveforms
  • Sample decks (like those in Traktor S4) on both Duo and Pro
  • All 4 decks can be used as a full deck or a 4-trigger sample deck
  • The new interfaces have THRU and will continue to work even when no computer is connected (making DJ switch-overs easier) and will also have an extra I/O (most likely for the sample decks)
  • & A LOT more that we’ll outline when Native Instruments makes the official announcement…

NI TRAKTOR PRO 2 An all new Traktor is coming!

Here’s a sneak-peak pic of the new Traktor Pro (this is REAL, taken from an official retailer in Hong Kong)

Serato and Rane are really stepping up. Last year they released the Rane 68, a nice piece of kit but really unpractical in that is costs $100 more than Pioneer’s flagship DJM-2000 even though it isn’t nearly as advanced and the only reason a club would want one is for Scratch Live DJ’s. Yes, Scratch Live is a mainstay for local Sacramento hip hop/top 40 deejays but with so many deejays still playing CDs and Traktor Scratch Pro taking up more and more of the market-share in the US (it already owns the market everywhere else in the world, where Serato Scratch Live is no more than an afterthought) the wisdom of buying a $2,600 mixer that many performers would not even use is really in question.

However Rane and Serato had a number of big announcements at NAMM this year. The first was the effects-heavy Scratch Live 2.2 update and the next was Scratch Live SL4, the new soundcard/interface/dongle that brings a lot of the benefits of the Rane 68 to regular Scratch Live users that don’t want to be forced to go that route. Check the video…

We’re looking at the industry’s first DVS interface with dual USB ports. We think this means a two things… 1.) two deejays can play 2×4 with one interface (since Serato users now have full timecode control over 4 turntables or CDJs), and mid-party switchovers, once the bane of DVS user’s and the club’s soundguy’s existence, will not be a hassle at all. Clubs in a city like Sacramento, with SOOOOO many top 40 deejays playing on Scratch Live, would be silly not to buy one of these the day they come out, it will be a great investment for their deejay booth for the switchover value alone!

On top of the dual-USB ports and ease of deejay switchover that comes with it, the SL4 brings more to the table than any Serato/Rane interface to date…

  • Supports 4 turntables or CD decks switchable in any combination
  • Aux Input for session recording or LiveFeed
  • Aux Output assignable to the SP-6 Sample Player and The Bridge
  • Four software-switchable analog Thru connections for regular vinyl or CD
  • 48 kHz and 96 kHz sample rate switch on the SL 4 rear
  • 10-in 10-out USB sound card with any software supporting ASIO or Core Audio
  • Bus power from either USB port or the included external power supply
  • This really raises the bar in Serato’s favor, but can Traktor be far behind? The answer is a big fat NO and the new Traktor Scratch, Traktor Audio interfaces, and the fact that they promise to cost less are three reasons to wait for a what Native Instruments has to say on Feb 1st…

Added District 30 to the poll…

    Posted by: | Comments (0)

We’ve added District 30 to the soundsystem poll (to the left of this). I know that starting from 0 isn’t fair but something tells me they’ll be #1 before too long, even starting from behind.

Or should we start the poll over since District 30 is just opening this week?

    Expanding and growing this website…

    Posted by: | Comments (0)

Revival Nitelife wants to expand and grow this website to be everything YOU want it to be. For starters, does anyone think a new user forum would be worth it, or is there already too much of that out there? We know there really isn’t such an animal catering to Sacramento nightlife anymore (since Napkin Nights got rid of their forums many years ago) and maybe that is because no one wants one. What do you think?

    About Classics Tonight…

    Posted by: | Comments (0)

Wow! The response to tonight’s Classics party has been incredible. People from all sorts of different scenes, that don’t normally party together, are going to be at Classics tonight. I’m excited to see people come together under one roof (on that incredible sound system with one of Cali’s best deejays behind the decks)!
