Imagine being in another country 20 years ago and wanting to make it in the world of club music. You’re in Italy, Germany, or the UK you’re in luck. Everyone is doing it. Now imagine you’re in Latvia, no such luck. In 1991 these Latvian kids wanted to do what kids these days can do with their mom’s credit card and a trip to best buy, deejay! Except they couldn’t get their hands on Technics 1200′s, they were just way too expensive (hell, I couldn’t get my parents to buy them for me back in 91′ either, and I lived in a middle-class suburb in the Bay Area at the time) and if they could there was no way to get hip hop/house/techno/electro records to play on them anyways.

“Makin’ the most of what I got”, one of my favorite sayings, is exactly what they did. Check out Mr Tape with two crappy reel-to-reels fashioned into turntables and a mixer (some finger-triggered contraption that works like a transform switch) and music recorded off the radio. That’s it!

Impressed to say the least. Are you?

us 1104 186269 front RadioSlave in N. Cali next week (11.4.10)!!!No matter what sounds you profess to be your music of choice, chances are, that at some point over the last five years, you will have got your rocks off to Matt Edwards.

As Matthew E he fashions club-based, dancefloor slayers. Under that aegis he’s updated the classic Chi-town, jackin’ sound beloved of house aficionados and layered it with fractured funk, belligerent, oddball beats and mechanical soul.

If Matthew E is all about the Saturday Night Fever, then, by contrast, Rekid is the slower, more deliberate, rhythmical funk of the mid-week mayhem. Its well-intentioned muscular intensity making it perfect soulful sustenance.

Quiet Village is something else all together. A collaboration with long-time musical sparring partner Joel Martin (a vinyl freak, like Mr Edwards, who works in esteemed auction house Christie’s pop department), it’s sample-based music which veers from drawn out disco-not-disco delirium to evocative, under-stated soundscapes.

Sea Devils – you keeping up at the back? – is undeniable electronic pop brilliance. Working with Tom from Cagedbaby, it’s the least niche of Matt’s projects and thanks to Sea Devils alluring pop dance grooves they’ll no doubt be shagging the upper reaches of the hit parade sometime soon.

There is a brand new weekly dance event beginning weekly in Sacramento this weekend.  ‘Escape’ inside the Fugu Lounge. If you haven’t heard of this venue it may be because it’s not in downtown/midtown like almost everything else. Fugu is actually in Natomas, very close to Arco Arena. On May 22nd the promoters of this all-new weekly bring us DJ Heavygrinder from LA, a very special guest (and expensive booking we assume) for the grand opening. A bit of a celeb DJ of sorts but not in the talent/music department where she puts those fake “celeb” deejays to shame, H.G. is a REAL deejay…
