This Thursday, March 11th, the Revival crew is taking a trip to Phonic at San Francisco’s legendary End Up to party with our friend Deepchild. Many of you were here when Revival Nightlife and Mixture brought you Deepchild @ Faces last March and, because no Sacramento club will be bringing him back this time around, we’re going to travel to the storied SF nightclub for a night of proper clubbing with Deepchild and a capable supporting cast featuring Worthy and J Philp.

The End Up (for those that don’t know) is located at the corner of 6th and Harrison in San Francisco, CA.

It’s a rarity to see modern club music at a big club in Sacramento on a weekend and, even though JJ’s music is not out cup-o-tea, we’ll be there to support promoters trying to revive (and to check out the new club) Capital City nightlife from the current lows of every club with the same facsimile DJ, playing the same music, in the same way. It is time for a revival and parties like this certainly help…

Yes, Empire is no more. Closed for the last week and a half for a major change, Venue is not only a new name but the club has been redone from the ground up. We haven’t seen the inside yet, only pictures, so there wont be too much info to share in this post however they tell us the giant nightclub has undergone a $2 million rebirth, including (much needed) an all new sound system and club lighting as well. The new theme for Venue, officially dubbed “Punk Rock Meets Victoria’s Secret,” doesn’t really register with us as we haven’t seen it with our own eyes yet but anything to make Empire a better nightclub is welcomed (it was not one of Revival’s favorite clubs in Sacramento by any stretch).

We’re sure more info is on the way, until then here’s their website…

We’d love it if Sacramento could get a piece of Marco while he’s in Cali but I don’t see it happening at any of the clubs in Sac. So we make the trek to Vessel, not our favorite club in SF but easily one of the best sound systems in SF (which kind of makes it one of our favorites by default).

Yes, it is a Thursday night, and that might be rough for some Sac heads to travel to the city, party with Marco till 3 or 4 AM, and then work the next day but if there ever was a day to attempt it, Match 18th would be the day! Marco is really that good at what he does.

For Sacramento club installations, or the casual bedroom DJ, there’s a cool new toy out. The Numark NS7FX comes out of the box with minimal hassle and is mapped with Serato’s ITCH. It has motorized platters, virtual needle dropping and many more cool features, but only time will tell if these can hold up to the rough conditions of nightly use and abuse.

A full complement of premium faders, knobs, buttons, and new Strip Search virtual needle-drop control that integrates with ITCH. NS7FX exchanges turntable and control information with Mac or PC’s at more than ten times standard MIDI resolution, which results in a system that feels good with ultra low latency.

Pros: appears to have quality hardware (but only time will tell), well laid out and won’t leave you stumbling over your hands, pre-mapped out for ITCH (for all the lazy people out there ), optimized for a rock solid piece of software for limited crashing (Serato ITCH)

cons: expensive (nearly $1500USD), low likelihood to be a permanent fixture in a club and because of that it could turn into an expensive piece of practice gear.

Features:

High-resolution digital DJ controller with effects, built for Serato ITCH and compatible with Scratch LIVE libraries

Direct-drive, motorized turntable platters with classic and modern feel settings

Activate and control the effects in Serato ITCH

Includes Serato ITCH DJ software

Built-in audio with audiophile-grade circuitry, 24-bit interface

Extensive loop, cue, and track-access controls

Strip Search (patent pending) virtual-needle drop control

Controls most MIDI applications without requiring a mouse or keyboard

Rugged, all-metal construction

Integrated laptop stand

Fits in NS7 CASE for protection in transit to the gig

High quality, replaceable, adjustable CP-PRO crossfader and D-TYPE line faders

Support for Whitelabel.net files in ITCH

Mix using either 33rpm or 45rpm speeds

In addition to some already cool synth apps out there, there’s also two great products coming out from Akai and Alesis which allows a user to plug their device right into a keyboard so that there’s no more fumbling around on the tiny keys on the touchscreen! The Akai iPK25 transforms iPhone or iPod touch into a portable music production studio for mobile music creation. This MIDI keyboard controller gives your hand-held device a two-octave set of piano keys and professional audio outputs, and it works with the Akai Professional SynthStation Studio app.

.

Now, the iDiscover keyboard, along with the companion iDiscover Keyboard app, has 25 keys and effectively turns your iPhone into a music studio complete with synth-action keys, and pitch and modulation wheels. It doubles as a MIDI controller also.

It will be interesting to see if these types of products catch on since the the main plus of an iPhone is its portability, but I really like how powerful and versatile things are remaining while shrinking.

The Audio Kontrol 1. This sexy little unit is a complete audio & MIDI interface and doubles as a (limited) software control surface. NI also gave users the 24/192 ability (max 24 bit audio/192 khz sampling rate) for pristine audio and it comes bundled with free “lite” versions of NI’s award winning software Cubase and Traktor.

Sound.

Proper dance music requires proper sound. There is no way around it. It doesn’t have the be extremely loud, it has to be extremely good! The sound system is what brings quality dance music to life. It’s such an important aspect but almost entirely overlooked at 95% of clubs in Sacramento.

When the sound system is not up to par is has a defeating purpose. It sucks the life right out of the deejay, the dancefloor, and the party as a whole before too long. Dancefloors get lethargic and people start to leave. This may not happen with hip hop and top 40 for some reason (that’s an entirely different discussion), but it’s going to happen with house and techno if the sound system blows.

I’m tired of people blaming Sacramento, saying Sacramento sucks, and things like that. Sacramento hasn’t had a chance. There hasn’t been ONE decent Sacramento club in a decent Sacramento location, with a quality sound system to try and grow a house or techno event on a Friday or Saturday night in the last decade. Not one. And when you look around at the parties that some promoters are trying on weekends today you’ll see the same Sacramento people you’ll see at 4AM leaving Ruby Skye or 6AM at the End Up, but they are leaving the Sacramento party at 1AM. How’s that make any sense? They obviously aren’t having a good enough time at the party. There are many reasons for that and the catalyst for many of those reasons is the sound system. It is as important as any element of a good party.

These shitty Sacramento sound systems are sucking the life out of the deejays and the dancefloors and it’s really too bad. The good news is things seem to be changing. Clubs like MiX Downtown, Blush Ultralounge, and The Press Club now have fantastic sounds systems and are doing proper dance music events on Thursdays AND weekends!

There will be more on this story in the upcoming days, weeks, and months we’re sure!!!
